Sketches

I have been working on a children’s book about a manatee that lives in Costa Rica with her animal friends, these are some of the animal drawings. The goal of doing this was to determine what style the publisher wanted, more rendered and realistic or more graphic and playful…of course the most time consuming and challenging process was selected; graphite. I don’t mind this, but it does take me much much longer to finish unfortunately. Right now I’m finishing up the graphite of the first spread so I’ll post the final soon, hopefully it’ll be finished sometime over the weekend…fingers crossed.

This drawing still needs work, here it is anyway though. Right now the value structure isn’t quite working; there’s a missing chunk running diagonally through the center of it which divides the whole piece. So, my plan is to add more dark rocks and grasses in the middle, add interior highlights in the horse and rider, and either darken the background or add more eagle to tie the top of the drawing into the scene at the bottom…other than fixing a few more pieces though, I am finished with the graphite portion of my thesis and have the color to figure out next…

This is another one of the drawings I’m working on for my thesis project. It, like the others, still needs a little fixing here and there. I am planning on leaving the patients’ gown mostly flat and simply use the effects of watercolor to add shadows and make it more interesting. Color wise, I have no idea what to do, other than try to use bright hues; one goal for this project is to experiment and really try to use bright colors since I have failed to do so in pretty much all of my other pieces…no neon though…ever.
